| A
current medical certificate is required in order to execute the
privileges afforded by licences and permits issued by Transport
Canada. While you may fly with your instructor without holding
a certificate, you will need to obtain a medical certificate prior
to any solo flying.
You must hold the following category of certificate
in order to validate your permit or licence:
Student Pilot Permit: |
|
Category 4, 3 or 1 |
Recreational Pilot Permit: |
|
Category 4, 3 or 1 |
Private Pilot Licence: |
|
Category 3 or 1 |
Commercial Pilot Licence: |
|
Category 1 |
In most cases, a Category 4 certificate requires
only a self-declaration attested to by your personal physician.
Category
4 Medical forms are available from the Transport Canada web
site. Medical exams for the more stringent Category 3 and 1 certificates
must be given by Civil Aviation Medical Examiners approved by
Transport Canada.

Canada for a list of Civil
Aviation Medical Examiners.
Please obtain your medical certificate as early
in your flight training schedule as possible. Occasionally, delays
occur in receiving the certificate from Transport Canada, delaying
your ability to fly solo. Although a Category 4 is all that is
required for a Student Permit and Recreational Permit, (Category
3 for a Private Licence), students who intend eventually to obtain
a Commercial Licence often request a Category 1 certificate on
their initial exam to assure themselves that they will have no
difficulties meeting the more stringent medical requirements of
the Commercial Licence.
When used to validate a Private Pilots Licence
for domestic flights, the Category 3 or 1 medical certificate
is valid for five years for those under 40 years of age, and for
two years for those over 40. For international flights, the validity
times are 1 year over 40 and 2 years under 40. The Category 4
for the Recreational Permit is valid for two years for those over
40 and five years for those under 40. It is valid for 5 years
for all students when validating a Student Pilot Permit.
