Rating
Instructor rating information is provided for
informational purposes only. We do not offer instructor rating
training to the public generally at this time. Instructor rating
training will be considered on a case by case basis only.
The Instructor Rating is required if you wish
to teach people how to fly. An instructor rating allows you to
teach for the Private and Commercial licenses, the Night rating,
the VFR Over-The-Top rating and the instrument rating (if you
hold a valid instrument rating yourself). A basic pre-requisite
is that you must hold a Commercial license prior to beginning
training for the Flight Instructor Rating.
In the Flight Instructor course, you will learn
how to apply the basic principles of learning and techniques of
instruction; learn how to prepare and use lesson plans and how
to prepare and present ground instruction, pre-flight briefings,
in-flight instruction, and post-flight debriefings; develop a
deeper understanding of the theory of flight and aircraft procedures
and operating limits; develop techniques for presentation of pilot-decision
making concepts; and learn how to utilize a variety of Transport
Canada documents. In addition, you will develop the piloting skills
required to safely demonstrate and conduct training flights while
flying from the right-seat of the aircraft.
To these ends, you will
be required to:
- Complete at least 25 hours of Flight Instructor
Groundschool,
- Obtain at least 30 hours of dual flight
instruction from the holder of a valid Class I Flight Instructor
Rating.
You will also be required to take a Transport
Canada written examination (with 70% pass) and satisfactorily
complete a flight test.
Successful completion of the course leads to
issuance of the Class 4 Instructor Rating which allows you to
be employed as a flight instructor and work under direct supervision.
With additional experience and testing, the rating is upgraded
to a 3, 2 or 1, with an associated increase in privileges and
responsibilities.
Few candidates complete the requirements for
the Flight Instructor rating with only 25 hours of groundschool
instruction. Our experience has shown that most candidates require
approximately 40 hours to complete all the requirements to a satisfactory
level.
Accordingly, then a typical course would be
as below. For the current course rates, please consult the Rates
section of the website.
- 40 hours Ground Instruction
- 30 hours Dual Flight Instruction
- Any needed books or materials
