Transport Pilot License
The Air Transport Pilot license
is the highest level of licensing obtainable in Canada. In general,
the ATPL is only required where one wishes to act as pilot-in-command
of an aircraft requiring more than one flight-crew member. No
special training is required to obtain the ATPL, although additional
written examinations and experience are required beyond the standards
of the Commercial Pilot license.
In general, to obtain an ATPL,
the candidate must:
- Hold a Category 1 Medical Certificate
- Pass two additional written examinations
(no specific groundschool required)
- Have
a total of 1500 flight hours, which must include a minimum of
- 250 hours pilot-in-command
- 100 hours cross-country
flight time
- 100 hours night (25
hours cross-country)
- 75 hours instrument
flight time, and
- Hold
a valid multi-engine instrument rating.
The ATPL is usually obtained
by commercial pilots active in the industry. It is rare for a
non-working pilot to obtain the flight times required to meet
the standards of the ATPL.
